Pakistan’s total pharma market generates around $3.25 Bn every year. Out of which 50.18% of the pie goes to the top ten pharmaceutical companies operating in Pakistan.
These companies include both national and multinational corporations and wrestle with more than 800 pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan to take the top positions.
Here are the top ten companies that lead the pharmaceutical market in Pakistan and command a collective revenue of PKR 10 bn every year.
1.GlaxoSmithKline Pakistan Limited
GlaxoSmithKline is behind Pakistan’s most sold medicinal drugs, Augmentin and Calpol. GSK’s legacy company Glaxo Laboratories Pakistan Ltd. was the first company listed on Karachi Stock Exchange in 1951.
GSK Pakistan was created on January 1st, 2001 by merging SmithKline and French of Pakistan Limited with Glaxo Wellcome (Pakistan) and Beecham Pakistan (Private) Limited.
The company mainly operates in two industry segments. Pharmaceuticals, which includes prescriptions, drugs, and vaccines. And Consumer Healthcare, under which over-the-counter medicines, oral and nutrition care come.
GSK Pakistan alone commands over 8% of the value and 13% of the volume share of Pakistan’s pharma market. They have over 2000 employees across the country including in their sales and Pharma Supply Chain division.
GSK has a successful diverse portfolio of over 150 brands under its belt.
2.Getz Pharma (Private) Limited
Getz Pharma is a member of the Getz Group of companies. The Getz Group was founded in 1852 and has a legacy of more than 160 years. Today the Getz Group has over 12,000 employees all over the world and distributes agricultural, biomedical, pharmaceutical, technical and consumer products over 50 countries across the world.
Getz Pharma (Private) Limited is also the largest branded generic pharmaceutical company in Pakistan. It started its operations in the country in 1995 and since then has only grown. In 20 years the company went from 198th position to the second position among 800 pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan. Today, it’s the fastest growing pharma chain here and is the only company in Pakistan to have received the World Health Organization’s approval for its good manufacturing practices.
The company has recently also won the first prize for Best Practices in Occupational Safety Health and Environment (OSH&E) in the Food, FMCG and Pharmaceutical Sector.
Additionally, their manufacturing facility is the first and only facility in Pakistan that is certified and approved by the Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation scheme (PIC/S) which has more than 50 participating authorities, including US FDA, and European Medicines Agency, among others.
3.Abbott Laboratories Pakistan Limited
Have you ever bought pediasure or iBuprofen? Those are abbott’s products. The company is also behind Risek, Pakistan’s second most sold medicinal drugs, which brings in upward of 3,000 Million Rs. in revenue every year.
Abbott has been functioning in Pakistan since 1948 and offers a diverse range of products, starting from science-based nutrition to diagnostic tools, pharmaceuticals, and diabetes devices.
Abbott has more than 1,400 employees at its head office and manufacturing facilities in Karachi, sales office in Lahore, Peshawar and Rawalpindi. The distribution depots are in Islamabad, Multan and Lahore.
Abbott has revolutionized the way diabetes is measured and handled in Pakistan with its revolutionary glucose measuring devices. Apart from that the wide range of diagnostic tools Abbott offers has helped advance Pakistan’s health and medical sector.
4.Sami Pharmaceutical (Private) Limited
SAMI Pharmaceutical (Pvt) Ltd. manufactures formulations for various therapeutic areas. It offers solutions in therapeutic areas, such as rheumatology, anti infectives, and narcotic analgesics. The company provides its products through distributors. SAMI Pharmaceutical (Pvt) Ltd. was incorporated in 1971 and is based in Karachi, Pakistan.
Founded in 1971, Sami Pharmaceuticals challenged the MNC hold over Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry and made a place for itself. Today it’s the third largest pharmaceutical company in Pakistan, has over 80 distributors across Pakistan, and manufactures two of Pakistan’s top-selling drugs. Last year alone Novidat accumulated worth of 2,500 million rupees in revenue.

5.The Searle Company Limited
The Searle Family moved its headquarters to Karachi after the partition. They’ve been distributors since the late nineteenth century and have grown their company leaps and bounds and now operate in regions of South Asia and East Africa and distribute to top corporations like Unilever Pakistan, GSK Pakistan, British American Tobacco, Bristol Myers Squibb, among others.
Searle offers products in over 15 pharmaceutical categories including alternative medicines, analgesics, antibiotics, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, gynaecology, hepatology, nutrition, respiratory, and wellness among others.
Two of their most popular pharmaceuticals include Hydryllin and Nuberol Forte.
6.Martin Dow Pharmaceuticals (Pakistan) Limited
Founded in 1995, Martin Dow is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan. The healthcare giant sells over 60 brands and has more than 1000 employees all over Pakistan. The company specializes in research-based products and branded generics that are developed and manufactured at the facilities in Karachi.
Martin Dow is a pioneering force in Pakistan’s healthcare innovation sector. The company provides a range of therapeutic products involving anti-infectives, pediatrics, pain management, neuropsychiatry, cardiology, gastroenterology, dermatology, and endocrinology and diabetes.
The company is also looking forward to enter markets of vaccines, dentistry, oncology and cosmaceuticals, among others.

9.OBS Pakistan (Private) Limited
The OBS Group began operations in 1963 and today is one of Pakistan’s leading pharmaceutical corporations. OBS focuses on areas like anti-infectives, cardiology, CNS, Diabetes, Metabolic Disorders, Ophthalmology, Respiratory, Women’s Health, Vaccines, and Gastroenterology. They pharma Goliath has over 106 pharmaceutical brands and 7 consumer brands in Pakistan.

Sanofi has over 1000 employees in Pakistan is a major force behind all the research and work being done in the field of diabetes in Pakistan.
The company keeps bringing world’s leading diabetes experts to Pakistan and arranges extensive workshops and seminars for the same.
Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry is thriving. New research based products are entering the market everyday and collaborations with international corporations and research laboratories is helping advance the healthcare sector. While a few companies have witnessed fluctuations and dips, the growth factors mostly remain positive.
