BACKGROUND of DIAMER BHASHA DAM – Why Pakistan needs BHASHA DAM
As first proposed in the year 1980 in General Zia times, Pakistan was keen to build a cascade of Mega DAMs along the Indus River flowing down from Indian Himalayas mountain ranges despite Indian opposition.
1958 to 1976 was Pakistan’s golden era for the construction of DAMS and the development of Hydro Power projects. The Tarbela Dam and Mangla Dam were constructed during those times.
Followed by the water shortages, which became more acute and inconsistent in the Power generation and changes in the weather patterns due to Global warming and producing electricity from high-priced furnace oil. In 1991, the ‘Water Apportionment Accord’ between the provinces underlines the need for building water storages to store flood and storm rainwater in Gilgit and NWFP (now KPK) provinces.
The DAM construction awarded forty years ago after the idea of developing a DAM was conceived. It took almost sixteen years to complete the feasibility and took twelve years to design.
The foundation stone was laid by the one President and three Prime Ministers from 1998 to 2011.
INDIAN OBJECTION ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF DIAMER BHASHA DAM
Indian news agencies must be shamed on calling DIAMER BHASHA DAM an ecological disaster. India is falsely claimed that the construction of the Dam will cause a water shortage in LADAKH (Kashmir).
India is not happy with the Chinese expanding presence in the Chinese bordering area Gilgit-Baltistan and taking advantage of the seismic profile of the location of the project but it is all gimmicks and false claims made by Indian media and press. This DAM is the world’s highest RCC –Reinforced Cement Concrete made by the World’s Greatest Super Power China who has hands-on experience of constructing dozens of this kind of DAM project lies on the high seismic locations. Pakistan has no illegal occupation on any of Gilgit-Baltistan land and the great people of Gilgit-Baltistan are living with peace and harmony in Pakistan.
Finally, The DIAMER BHASHA DAM has begun
Finally, at this blessing day of receiving news for the beginning of DIAMER BHASHA DAM, forget past and be positive and let’s talk about the recent developments regarding the DAM. The PTI government has decided to split the DAM Construction project into two major components. The DAM will be constructed through Public-sector funds and the Power will be developed as IPP – Independent Power by Chinese money.
DBD – Diamer Bhasha Dam is a multipurpose and tallest concrete dam in the world. It also has a hydropower enterprise and funded through the public sector and commercial loans and would be completed in 2028.
Features of DIAMER BHASHA DAM and its Size and Location
The construction project of DIAMER BHASHA DAM is economically significant as it will create water storage with an active capacity of more than 7,900,000,000 cubic meters or 8 MAF (million-acre feet) for agriculture –it can irrigate more than 1.2 million acres agriculture land –with more than 18.1bn units of clean and environmentally friendly and carbon-free production of electricity for the motherland.
The acquired project area of DIAMER BHASHA DAM will encompass about 110 kilometers, where over 32 thousand acres of land in Gilgit-Baltistan province (which borders CHINA) with just 162 acres in KPK province.

The DAM will have a spillway with fourteen gates and five outlets for flushing out the sludge or mud deposits. The DIAMER DAM diversion system involves two tunnels and a diversion canal as all three have a kilometer length each and a 21 Megawatt plant will be built to meet the energy requirements of the DAM project during construction.
The DIAMER BHASHA DAM is will come upon ‘Daray-e-Sindh’ Indus river near Chilas (KPK-Gilgit regions of motherland) and located in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan province about 315 kilometers upstream of the Tarblea (DAM) and 40 kilometers of the Chilas. Chilas is part of the Silk-Road connected by the Shahra e Karakoram and National Highway N90 which link it to Islamabad and Peshawar.
BOTH, ADB (Asian Development Bank), AND WORLD BANK KEPT THEMSELVES AWAY FROM FINANCING THE DIAMER BHASHA DAM….
DIAMER BHASHA DAM is a Savior of Pakistani Nation
This DAM saves billions of rupees flood losses annually and as we mentioned above, it will bring more than 1 million additional agricultural lands under cultivation. Pakistan faces more than 12 million acre-feet water shortages and due to these shortages, Pakistan gets short of wheat, cotton, rice, maize, and other crops. DIAMER BHASHA DAM will reduce the water shortage from 12 million acre-feet to 6 million acre-feet and it will increase water shortage from 30 to 48 days.
THE DAM WAS CONCEIVED 40 YEARS AGO, BUT IT WAS APPROVED FOR CONSTRUCTION BY GENERAL PERVEZ MUSHARRAF IN 2006…
DIAMER BHASHA DAM will help to sustain other Industries
The BHASHA DAM construction not only creates jobs, it will generate a large demand for Cement and other Minerals required for the construction of a DAM and also generate steel demands which will help these industries to grow and stimulate economic growth.
